Working from home or remote work has its challenges and opportunities.
If you do it right, working from home can be a positive and rewarding experience for you, your family and your employer.
Follow these tips to get the most out of working from home.
#1 Have all tools in place
Think about many of the things you might need in your office.
A computer, phone, printer, WiFi, and an organised space are given. But you will also need paper, ink, possible letter head, pens, sticky notes. Make sure all are in place.
#2 Set clear boundaries
If you have children who are learning at home or who come from school while you’re still working, they need clear rules about what they can and cannot do during that time.
#3 Remove distraction
Your space should be free from distraction such as family, pets, home telephone, the television, even an attractive view if you are new to telecommuting.
Be aware of technology distraction. There are so many things you can do with Internet access.
The time you spend on scrolling through social media during work hours translate into more time you’ll need to work.
Occasional check are okay but use a timer to be sure an hour hasn’t passed without you noticing.
#4 Stop multitasking
Dividing your attention means you are not really paying attention to either activity.
Better to focus on one thing at a time, crop it off your list and move on.
#5 Set a separate space for your work area.
Designate an area of your home specifically for work.
This could be an empty or spare bedroom that you convert to a home office. If you are pressed for space , you can set up a desk for your computer and office supplies.
#6 Set specific work hour.
If you are going to make working from home an everyday commitment, then set specific business or work hour.
